Merida Cup @ Shetou, Zhanghua
Craig December 9th, 2007
This weekend saw the 2007 Merida Cup take place in Shetou), Changhua county. A series of mountain bike races over back roads and hiking trails was held. I meet up with Joe from Fotozon and we headed down to see the action. We arrived in time to see five uphill races spaced out over a couple of hours. I’ve no idea who won or what the prizes were, so I’ll leave you with a bunch of pictures from the day. Enjoy.

Taipei 101 International Photography Award
Craig December 8th, 2007
Taipei 101 is holding a photography competition between now and March 30, 2008. More information about it can be seen here. The website is in Chinese only (which greatly limits my understanding of it), but hopefully they’ll put up an English version soon - it is supposed to be an international competition after all.

Thai Star Outtake
Craig December 5th, 2007
Here’s one from last Sunday that didn’t quite work. Shot at ISO3200 with a Canon 40D and 17-40mm f4L lens wide open for 1 sec. And obviously no tripod.

The NHBushman Jams
Craig December 3rd, 2007
I met up with MJ Klein, the New Hampshire Bushman, his beautiful wife , Hui Chen, and Saumen for some music at a Thai nightclub and the best Thai food I’ve had in Taiwan at Shao-hui’s in Hukou. We actually started at the Pig and Whistle in Hsinchu, where a forumosa.com afternoon happy hour was taking place. After a couple of hours at the happy hour, we headed to Thai Star, where MJ was playing a set with Thai band Fong. He had previously played with them at an SE Asian Music Festival which he blogged about a couple of weeks ago. Incidentally, MJ was a featured photographer on this site a couple of months ago. Okay, enough of the words, it’s time for the photos. Enjoy.

For the photo geeks amongst you, here’s a couple of technical notes. This club was dark. Very dark. To capture these shots, I needed to shoot at ISO 1600 and 3200, underexpose a lot of the shots and drag the shutter just to get something usable. Very tough shooting conditions. And to make matters worse, there was a hot yellow light above MJ’s head that was blowing out most of the shots. If I exposed so that it wasn’t blown out, everything else ended up too underexposed to use. I’ll post a few outtakes later in the week of some shots that didn’t quite work.
