Chen’s Last Act
Friday, February 29, 2008 12:14In his self-described last appearance as head of state, Taiwan’s president Chen Shui-bian (陳水æ‰) yesterday took part in the 228 Peace Memorial Day (和平紀念日) ceremony in remembrance for the 228 Incident (二二八事件). After a speech to mark the occasion at 228 Peace Park, Chen and vice-president Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) headed to the Democracy Memorial Hall (å°ç£æ°‘主紀念館) - formerly Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall (䏿£ç´€å¿µå ‚) - to greet the participants in the Walk Against the Wind (逆風å‰é€².最愛å°ç£) march. David Reid has a full report of the day’s events, which culminated in a march through Taipei’s street’s to Zhongshan Stadium where DPP presidential canditate Frank Hsieh (è¬é•·å»·) and running mate Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) spoke to thousands of DPP supporters and curious onlookers.
