The photo above shows the main gate to Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall at night. The name was controversially changed to National Taiwan Democracy Memorial Hall and Liberty Square in 2007, however it was changed back by the KMT government in August 2008. The characters on the gate denote the original inscription of the gate (which is too unwieldy to bother typing in English) – they were removed and replaced by the then sitting DPP government to reflect the name change (to Liberty Square). Although the name has reverted to its original, the new characters remain in place as a conciliatory gesture from the KMT to the DPP. In practice, the vast majority of people continued to refer to it by its original name even after the change.
