Spacefunk @ Bliss | Taiwan Travel Photographers

With their unique blend of electro, disco, rock, hiphop and swing, Spacefunk brought their show and some special guests to Bliss in Taipei last weekend. A decent sized crowd came along and were treated to a night of diverse musical styles from the various acts.

Kicking things off was Nick Fothergill from Black Lung Inner City Choir performing a short solo acoustic set. With thoughtful lyrics and an acoustic guitar, Nick warmed the crowd up with a great set.

Sarah Zittrer joined him for harmonies on a couple of songs, then moved behind the keys to play a few of her own tunes.

The lights dimmed and the bellydancers came out. Dancing in near darkness, they brought a mystique to the room that set the mood for Spacefunk.

Starting with a single strobing flashlight for illumination, Spacefunk took the stage. Mixing the styles up and moving from trip hop to swing, hiphop to rock, all with a funky vibe, they played a great set that left the crowd wanting more.

Spacefunk’s next gig will be with the Money Shot Horns on March 7th at VU Livehouse in Taipei. I highly recommend going to see them play – you won’t be disappointed.

Shooting Notes – This was a tricky gig to shoot due to how dark the room was. I used Canon EOS 5d Mark II and Canon EOS 40D bodies, with 17-40mm f4L and 50mm f1.8 lenses. The available light shots really tested the low light capabilities of the 5D, with decent results coming from shooting at ISO6400. For flash, at times I had a 540EZ gelled with 1/4 cut of CTO triggered by Elinchrom Skyports. Due to the cramped space, I wasn’t really able to position this where I’d have liked, so I ended up resorting to a handheld 550EX with mini-softbox triggered in ETTL by a Canon ST-E2.

Great shots. I especially like the bellydancing photo because it actually *works* in b&w. Too many people convert crap photos to b&w to try and give them some artistic merit. LOL. I also like the high-key lighting shot of Clare.

You need to think about getting an inexpensive film RF (like a bessa r) with a wide angle. It would work better for photos like the first one. No retrofocus element means no distortion

Thanks Brian. I've often considered picking up a film RF, just haven't gotten around to it yet – although that's a poor excuse as it's been on my wishlist for a few years now

You can always play with one of mine if you want, just to see if you can get used to it. For some things, like wide-angles, it's a great tool. It's also very liberating to be able to see what's coming in to the frame while your shooting.

But it's also more of a specific tool then an SLR.

Next time I'll bring a Bessa R2 for you to play with (I still have an R2A to use). I also have most RF focal lengths (15, 21, 25, 28, 35, 50, 75, and 90) so you can get a good idea of what it's like, pros and cons.
