Hailed as East Asia’s most eco-friendly building, the Beitou branch of Taipei’s public library system is a marvel of green architecture. Formally opened in late 2006, the library is the first in Taiwan to qualify for a diamond rating (the highest) under the government’s EEWH (Ecology, Energy saving, Waste reduction and Health) certification system for sustainable construction.

Located in Beitou park, a short walk away from Xin Beitou MRT Station, the library has a collection of over 20 000 books in Chinese and English, including a large collection devoted to ecological conservation. However, it’s the architecture itself that makes this building so special.

As can be seen in the above picture, the library features a downward sloping roof. This roof is equipped with a rainwater collection system that promotes water conservation. The collected rainwater is used in the library bathrooms to flush the toilets. Also on the roof are photovoltaic cells that serve to convert sunlight into electricity and a 20-centimeter-thick layer of soil that provides thermal insulation.

In addition to the solar generated electricity, the library has large windows that help to conserve the electricity actually used. Their size means that there’s an abundance of natural light coming into the building, which lessens the need for lighting inside. These windows can also be opened wide, thus allowing a breeze in and lessening the use of air conditioners and fans.

Designed by Bio Architecture Formosana, a Taipei architecture company, the library makes extensive use of wood from sustainably managed plantation forests. Natural wood oils were used to treat the structure and protect it from the elements and insects.
