Shutterbug Sunday – John Lander | Asian Images

Sunday again and for this first Shutterbug Sunday for August, we’re off to Japan to meet John Lander or Asian Images.

As a 20 year resident of Japan, John finds the textures of Tokyo to be an always interesting and intriguing exercise in juxtaposition: chrome high rises side by side with ramshackle wooden noodle shops; Granny in exquisite kimono on the subway sitting next to Goth costume players – neither batting an eyelash as to the incongruity of it all.

On work, John states,

I occasionally write feature articles for travel magazines and Sunday travel sections in newspapers. I am expected to turn in accompany photos with text to editors, though in recent years the writing seems to get in the way of photography. After all, it is two different jobs so I have been trying to let the writing side fall by the wayside…

Projects: I have three ongoing projects that keep me engaged and involved in Japanese culture, insofar as a foreigner can do so. Though I’ve always been fascinated with Tokyo especially when I was young and first moved there, today I find it distracting. Fascinating but distracting. These days I prefer rural, bucolic Japan which for me includes Kyoto and Kamakura – I find these places far more rewarding especially since I am enthralled with Japanese festivals and Japanese gardens.
