Rock N Blues @ Underworld

Time for a bit of live music. Last weekend The Deadly Vibes returned to the stage at Underworld in Shi-da, Taipei. Underworld is a small, dark, smokey basement club that’s perfect for dirty rock n roll.

Joining them in his first Taipei performance was one-man blues extraordinaire Jack Conqueroo. Hailing from Louisiana, Jack now calls Kaohsiung home and blasts swampy blues that will blow your mind. He’s got a couple of upcoming gigs in Taipei and you owe it to yourself to check them out.

Jack Conqueroo opened the night. His bio states

Jack Conqueroo was born in the swamplands outside Lafayette, Louisiana on the twenty-first of November, 1969. Born to a coonass alligator poacher with a penchant for gator tail and moonshine, Jack grew up in amidst the mangroves, and was transformed by the sounds of the bayou. Jack ran away from home at the age of 5 to join the midway carnival that was parked outside his father’s shack. Hellbent on making it in show business, Jack stole his old man’s (Jacques Sr.) guitar and started playing for anyone with a nickel or who was willing to listen. Jack, like a good gumbo has been simmerin’ to perfection for the last 35 years. Listen carefully you can hear the sweltering, muddy, stickiness of the swamps Jack called home in his songs. Jack continues to entertain barrooms, and concert halls with his antiquated brand of Muddy, Low Down Dirty Blues, which Jack himself refers to as “De-Hell-ta” because it sounds “loud as hell!!!”, set against the vocoded and quantized musical landscape and tastes of his contemporaries. It’s all in the roux, people. It’s all in the roux!

The Deadly Vibes should need no introduction by now. They’ve been featured on this site a few times previously and always put on a great rocking show. With their recent European tour out of the way, and new record available, the gig doubled as a chance for them to film a video. If you’ve never seen these guys, you’re missing out. It’s always a great party.

  1. Nice set of photos. Underworld is not an easy venue to work in. I found a couple of videos of Jack Conqeroo on YouTube. I'll have to check out his performance when he next comes to Taipei.

That sure does look like a lot of fun. The pictures you took really caught the mood and the vibe of that place. This goes to show that rock&roll will never die. I also found Jack Conqeroo on youtube and he's quite something. He seems to live for this kind of music.

Thanks. I agree – rock & roll will never die, especially the live kind. There's just something primal about it.
