As we draw to the end of the year and the start of another it’s a good time to make a few changes. You’ve probably noticed a few differences over the past few days to the look of this site. I haven’t made any radical changes to the theme however I have enabled a few things that were previously turned off. The rotating slideshow at the top and the category slider underneath it being probably the most noticeable. There have been a few other things, so let’s take a look at them.
To start with my logo has had a little bit of re-branding. As time goes on, it’s becoming more and more obvious to me that cultural photography best sums up my work. One of the key aspects of life that we humans identify with is culture. We label people, places and events according to our ideas of what they are, ranging from the broader scale defined by tradition and place, down to the small scale subcultures and tribes. My photography, whether it’s general travel type imagery, live music, portraits of cosplayers and opera groups or telling interesting stories about certain segments of society, probably best fits into the cultural genre.
Moving along then to some issues of navigation. You’ll notice that the navigation menu bar at the top right has changed a bit. The dropdown that used to be called “pages” has had a name change. It’s now “info”. The information contained within is completely the same with the exception of the About page that has been completely re-written. Take a look and tell me what you think.
There is now a sixth option on the navigation menu and that is “portfolio”. This leads to my image library archive on Photoshelter. Photoshelter is an industry leader in secure image archiving and e-commerce solutions for photographers. I’m gradually adding my back catalog of images to the site there, so feel free to take a look around. Via the dropdown menu you can choose to browse the galleries or perform a detailed search using a number of different variables including keywords, location, release information, orientation and more. All of the photographs on the Photoshelter archive are available for immediate licensing or as prints.
Next we come to blog content. My Five For Friday category has been quite popular over the past year but it’s time for it to be retired. This Friday, Christmas Day, will be the last edition of 5. This week I will be presenting my five favorite images of 2009. Starting from the following Friday, January 1st 2010, will be a new project. Many of you have done or are at least familiar with the concept of photo-a-day posting. Well, I’m going to be taking the theory behind it, adding to it and producing something fresh, new and exciting. Make sure you check in daily throughout 2010. I should add that all other content that I usually post, be it travel stories, model shoots or live music will still be continued, which means that some days there’ll be 2 separate posts.
Also coming up over the next week will be a how-to guide to fireworks photography in time for New Year and the first desktop calendar of 2010. It’s been a great year, and the next one promises to be even better. Now go take some photos.
