Yes, the newer generation are amazing. I shot some night images at ISO 3200 last week (on flickr) on my 40D. Making them B&W, and some creative PP, reduced the noise. If I hadn't wanted black and white the images would have been frightening.

I love the high ISO capabilities of the newer generation of DSLRs. The opening shot here is actually at 6400.

Amazing for being shot at ISO 1600-3200. I have yet to try out the 7D for night work. I hear the 5D Mark 2 has less noise.
