Home Studio

Vitamin supplements.

Vitamin supplements in a home studio.

As long as you’ve got a table of some kind and a spare corner of a living room or basement, you can easily and inexpensively set up a small studio at home. If you can rustle up some gaffer tape, a wall, bed sheets, transparent shower curtains, paper, cardboard boxes, desklamps, string or fishing line, clamps and clothes stands, you’ll have all you need to provide lighting, backdrops, reflectors, diffusers and supports. All that remains is to pick up your camera and start shooting.

Taking things a step further, you could go shopping for one of the Strobist kits that MPEX puts together that start at $120, and you’ll have all you ever need. These kits come with umbrellas, cables, light stands, radio triggers and in some cases even a flash.

From there, the sky is the limit. You can mix and match store bought with DIY accessories, experiment with different gels, make snoots and grids, bounce light off things, use house plants as gobo’s and more. You’re really only limited by your imagination.

Yeah, I was thinking about setting up a small light tent to photograph products… I'm not at that point yet, because I'm still doing site content, but once I run out of major site content, I will end up posting a mix of images: stock photos, royalty free images, product images (from advendors), and more of my own product photos (once I know how to take a decent shot)… I'm reading this article and one at DTS on how to make your own light tent.

Let me know if you do that and I'll take you to the studio supply store in Taipei. You can buy them there for not much, maybe NT$1000 or less.

That's mighty generous. I have the box on my desk right now… and I'm wondering if it's big enough. It should be, … I'm still wondering how to fit out the box… and where I can get some white cloth to cover the sides of the box… :D Once I know that answer, I'll be ready to start.

I think the first one won't be particularly good, but at least I'll be able to take some of my own photo shots for the new site. That would be much better as I can CHOOSE the content carefully, and I don't have to rely on more general stock photos which tend to NOT shoot things I need. For example, I'd like to shoot specific varieties of beans (robusta vs. arabica for one) to highlight the differences.

Part of what will make my coffee site different is that it will include close up shots (as close as my lumix camera will allow) of what we drink…

You should be able to get some rolls of white paper in a stationery store that'll do the job. After the move is complete in the next week, I'm happy to help you get set up and give you some pointers.
