Chasing Reflections – A New Release From Craft & Vision

Chasing Reflections

Opening with a beautiful image of a golden building reflected in a playground that’s having the early morning snow washed away, Eli Reinholdtsen’s entry in Craft & Vision’s : The Print and the Process series certainly grabs the reader’s attention. Over the next 72 pages, the reader is treated to a large selection of creative photography centered around the theme of reflections. Every image inside is a reflection in some way, be it a building in a puddle, a shop mannequin in a window or people in cracked glass.

Chasing Reflections is the third title in The Print and The Process series, following on from Venice and Safari, both written by David du Chemin. Reinholdtsen takes a fresh approach to photography through her quest for reflections, which often sees her throwing the rule book away and letting her creativity be her guide.

The Premise opens the text section, with a brief introduction from Eli. The Print follows, a series of 37 photographs that each require a second and third look. The photographs are multi-layered and each new viewing gives you something more. There’s a Buddhist proverb that says “when the student is ready the teacher will appear” and looking at Eli’s images brings that to mind. It’s almost as if you need to take in the photographs one layer at a time, with a little bit more slowly being revealed with each subsequent look.

Inside Chasing Reflections

Chasing Reflections continues with her explanation of her creative process, covering areas such as finding a muse and the general though process behind the imagery. She describes her interpretation of reflections via the combining of many images into a single frame through in-camera layering techniques, the quest for good light – in this case the kind of light we normally consider terrible, her use of depth of field, focus points and angles.

The publication concludes with a brief description about each of the photographs that were included in the earlier section. This explanation gives us a further insight into the photographer’s mind and her process of creativity.

Like other releases in this series by Craft & Vision, Chasing Reflections is more about the creative process and the motivation of the artist than it is a how to guide. And that is a good thing.
