While the digital age and the advent of the internet has undoubtedly had an adverse affect on traditional print journalism, one of the benefits of it has been the rise of the news photo blog. Most of the major news organizations and publications now offer regular photoblogs, made up of images from different sources, be it their own in-house photographers, assignment photographers or wire-service imagery. These photoblogs don’t just appeal to other photographers, instead attracting people with a wide variety of interests on a regular basis by showcasing imagery from all over the world. With the recent introduction of devices such as the Apple iPad, the future for these photoblogs looks bright. Here are nine photoblogs that should be on the viewing list of all photographers.
The Big Picture at boston.com
The Big Picture is the Boston Globe / boston.com photoblog and is a favorite of many. Each entry focuses on a particular theme, with large images gathered from a ariety of photographers and sources.
Denver Post
Denver Post’s plog is a collection of photoblogs that tell different stories. From images of the past to weekly news features, sport to war, the Denver Post has something that will attract your interest.
Washington Post Camera Works
The Washington Post Camera Works merges print journalism, documentary film making and photojournalism to bring readers a diverse photographic experience covering a range of different areas.
New York Times Lens
The New York Times Lens blog is a showcase for the newspaper’s photographers with slideshows, pictures of the day, photo essay and assignment features. Always packed with great content.
BBC In Pictures
BBC In Pictures features a mixture of images from BBC photographers with photo essays, day in pictures, slideshows and more, as well as user-generated content.
The Guardian
The Guardian has a diverse range of photographic content. Here you can find news stories, a camera club complete with it’s own monthly assignments and Flickr group, news features and a My Best Shot section.
The Frame – Sacramento Bee
The Frame is the Sacramento Bee’s photoblog. This is presented in a similar fashion as The Big Picture, with large images focusing on a theme from somewhere around the world.
Reuters
Reuters photoblog takes advantage of Reuters large international pool of photographers to provide a range of different content covering a diverse range of themes.
MSNBC
Subtitled Conversations Sparked by Photojournalism,MSNBC’s photoblog is another that covers a diverse range of subjects from around the world with large images for maximum effect. The stories here often include extra text as well as the photos.
