Today is the second part of my look at the X-Equals Cold Storage Volume 2 preset collection. I’ll be looking at the black and white / monochrome / IR presets today. If it’s color you’re after, that was yesterday so after you’ve read this post, take a look at that one. Read on after the jump.
Before we get into it, I want to remind you about Selina Maitreya’s The View From Here. Selina brings 3 decades of portfolio consultancy experience and wisdom to this MP3 series that’s a must-have for anyone either contemplating becoming a working photographer or professionals looking for a little extra inspiration. Normally $199, it’s available at a 50% discount using the code FOSCFI.

A daguerreotype preset opens today’s post. Daguerreotype was the first successful photographic process developed in the 1830s by Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce. This is a great preset for anyone looking for an old-style look.
The image used in today’s post is a variation on yesterday’s. Both are outtakes from a shoot I did a few days ago for a publishing company. I snapped them (literally) while walking out of the national park and back down the road to civilization. It appears to be a pretty good spot though, so I’m going to make a trip back there when I get the chance. Here is the original image with a straight black and white conversion done in Lightroom 3.
There are a couple of familiar Kodak black and white films here. One of the most convenient for a lot of photographers who didn’t want to mess around in the darkroom or search for a good lab was Kodak’s C41 offerings. These films could be developed at a standard one hour minilab. Included in this collection is the professional version Kodak BW400CN – Exp 9/07. There’s also a Tri-X offering, with a preset for Tri-X 400 @ 1600 included.
There are a number of presets of films that I have no experience with, including Maco Cube, Maco IR and Maco PO, and Forte Fortepan 100, 200 and 400.

Better known for their medium format cameras, Rollei also make a range of different films and some of the emulsions are in this preset collection. Included presets are Rollei IR, Rollei Retro, Rollei Ortho and Rollei R3.

Other monochrome presets in the Cold Storage Volume 2 collection range from classic films such as Kodak T-Max, Ilford Delta 3200 and Fuji Neopan to the vintage looks of Classicpan and Fomapan.

Overall, the black and white offerings in X-Equals Cold Storage 2 collection offer a useful set of choices for developing your RAW files. For me, the real winner in this collection is the Fuji Velvia 100 @ 80 preset that I talked about yesterday.
