Journey Through Java by Mitchell Kanashkevich – A Review

Journey Through Java

New releases from Craft and Vision are always welcome and this latest in their The Print and The Process continues the trend of high quality work at affordable prices. This latest one is extra special to me because its author, Mitchell Kanashkevich was first featured on my blog last year. In addition I posted a review of one of Mitchell’s other eBooks recently.

Like all the releases in this series, Journey Through Java starts out with The Premise. Think of this an an author’s introduction to what follows, with a brief detailing of the motivations and purpose behind the photographs, in this case covering three separate areas of the Indonesian island of Java. I’ve been to one of the places that features in this eBook and seeing the photographs here makes me want to schedule a return trip, especially as I was there in the pre-digital days and some of the film I shot became damaged.

The Process

Research and preparation is an essential part of travel, particularly for a documentary travel photographer. Kanashkevich gives the reader detailed descriptions of his preparations that include issues of language and its importance, issues of equipment, logistics and stereotypes. Mitchell engages in intentional photography, that is the setting forth a series of objectives from the process rather than just reacting to whatever happens. As he says, it “allows me to create work that is more purposeful and more personal”.

Journey Through Java

The process continues with discussion on depth and uniqueness, understanding and connection, the freedom to explore at will and the freedom to spend extra time on location forming relationships with the people.

Photography is highly dependant on light, and a few pages are spent discussing this aspect. It’s not done in a by the numbers kind of way, rather the discussion centers on the quality of light and its interactions, regardless of whether that light is ambient or photographer-introduced.

Journey Through Java concludes with a brief discussion of the post processing stage followed by a short breakdown of each of the 24 images that are in the book.

For the first four days only, if you use the promotional code JAVA4 when you checkout, you can have the PDF version of Journey Through Java – The Print & The Process for only $4 OR use the code JAVA20 to get 20% off when you buy 5 or more PDF ebooks from the Craft & Vision collection.
