Most photographers have by now started blogging and for those that haven’t, I suggest you get started. Blogging allows you to show whatever you want in regards to photography – maybe some phototips like I’ve been doing here, or perhaps a photo a day project or some glimpses behind the scenes. A further benefit of joining the blogosphere is the ability to connect with others in the community who are doing similar things. That community might be defined differently for different people – a travel photographer may be looking to connect with other travel photography blogs for example, or it could simply be geographic, which is where today’s phototip is leading. In this case I’m going to be referring to and introducing some Taiwan photography blogs that are in the running for best blog. There are quite a few opportunities for any blogger to enter their site in a blog awards competition including Photoblog Awards and Blogger’s Choice to name just two.
As I mentioned above, today I’ll be featuring some Taiwan blogs. Why just feature Taiwan blogs? Well, every December, there is a casual competition here for best blog in Taiwan in a variety of categories. I won the best photography blog last year but this year I’ve decided not to enter, mainly because my blog hasn’t really focused on Taiwan in any specific way over the past year. However, I’m am one of the judges in the peer-voted section which runs concurrently with a public voting section.
Taiwan has a strong and healthy blogging community with a number of active photography-related blogs. The only criteria for entry to these awards is that the blog is registered in the blog directory at Taiwanderful, an English-language website dedicated to information on Taiwan. There are also a lot of Chinese-language blogs that feature great photography that aren’t included here by virtue of the fact that they haven’t registered their sites. The great thing about photography is that language need not be a barrier to enjoying fine photography.
The following are in no particular order. A wide variety of genres and fields are covered with everything from street to nightclubs, travel to corporate. I should also mention that I personally know most if not all of the photographers who run the blogs. Without further ado, here are the blogs in the running in 2010.
Alton’s Images – Alton Thompson is an American orchestra conductor and university professor who runs a photoblog featuring a mixture of portraits, behind the scenes classical music shots and general life scenes.
Nico Phototography – Nico is a French wedding photographer who posts a lot of incredible wedding images on his site. His services are in high-demand throughout Taiwan.
Garret Clarke – Garret is based in the southern city of Tainan and he’s is responsible for some excellent documentary photography. Recently, he’s been producing a lot of nightclub and live music imagery that makes a good addition to his portfolio.
Neil Wade – Neil is a travel and corporate photographer based in Taipei. He has photographed everyone from CEOs of international companies all the way through to villagers in remote Tibetan towns.
Lief In Taiwan – Rich J. Matheson, better known as Lief, produces a lot of stunning cultural documentary work from his base in southern Taiwan. He recently shot the cover image for the new Bradt travel guide to Taiwan.
Taiwan Photographers – Run by Carrie of My Several Worlds fame, Taiwan Photographers is a group photo of the day type blog that features single images by a wide range of photographers.
Jimmy Yen – Jimmy’s blog is the one I’m least familiar with. It features a range of different subjects in a photo a day type style, although it’s not updated to quite that extent.
Brian Q. Webb – Brian has previously contributed a guest post here on street photography and that’s what he specializes in. If you’re a fan of great street photography, head on over and take a look.
Steven Vigar – Vigar is Taiwan’s premier party photographer, regularly showing up at numerous parties and events to document the night.
Darren Melrose – Darren used to post regularly with a mixture of candid street portraits and occasional thoughts and tips, but he seems to be taking a break for a while, as the site hasn’t been updated in a few months.
I highly recommend you check some of these photography-related blogs out. Taiwan has a pretty healthy English-language blogosphere and there’s plenty to see.
