Taiwan's Ba Jia Jiang or Eight Generals are temple and deity guardians that offer mystical protection durign religious ceremonies and events. Bao An Temple, Taipei, Taiwan. (Craig Ferguson)
Go to any temple festival or religious event in Taiwan and you’re likely to see a group of young men with painted faces who are wearing elaborate costumes. These will most likely be members of a Ba Jia Jiang, or 8 Generals, troupe. I’ve written about them previously and encourage you to click the link if you wish to know some more of the background. They are a favorite subject of travel and culture photographers in Taiwan, so I thought I’d take the opportunity to share a series of recent images of the various troupes. These were all photographed at the recent Bao Sheng Culture Festival held recently at Taipei’s Bao An temple or at last year’s Taipei City God festival at the Xiahai Temple.
