Understanding Exposure by Andrew S Gibson

Understanding Exposure

A new photography eBook has just been launched by Andrew S. Gibson, photographer and technical editor of EOS Magazine. Titled Understanding Exposure, it promises to present you with all the tools you need in order to get the photographs you want. You’ll notice the subtitle in the picture above – Perfect Exposure on Your EOS Camera. Rest assured that this publication is not just for users of Canon EOS cameras, as a lot of the included information is the same no matter what camera system you use, and that which is specific to Canon is easily translatable to other systems.

So who is this book for? Well, it covers a lot of basic, fundamental knowledge about exposure and basic operation of your camera, so if you are a novice photographer, you’ll get a lot out of it. In fact, most of the the content is almost exactly what I teach to one of beginner classes at Taipei Photo School, so if you are a teacher of photography, you may find this a useful teaching tool.

Understanding Exposure is divided into three parts. Part 1 looks at the theory behind exposure. Subjects covered include discussion on how the camera measures light, the exposure triangle, file formats and histograms to name a few. Moving on to Part 2, and here is where you get into the specific Canon camera information, describing the various settings and meanings behind the dials. As somebody who teaches a lot of students who have a wide range of different cameras, I can tell you that a lot of the settings discussed here are easily interpreted for other systems. For example, in Understanding Exposure it talks about Av and Tv. If you use a Nikon camera, the corresponding settings are A and S. And it’s like that for most of the other settings discussed – there are equivalents for different camera systems. Finally Part 3 pulls it all together, offering you three different shooting scenarios and how to go about approaching scenes where certain conditions are present. This section, like the first, is not camera specific.
