How Much Should I Charge?

Deciding on a fee for your photography is often a daunting prospect. The ins and outs of pricing, licensing, calculating usage rights and so on can be very confusing when you’re first starting out. If your local market is anything like mine, there’ll likely be an awful lot of photographers working for beer money, and an equal number of clients taking advantage of that and imposing unrealistic demands. Case in point, I recently had a request for 4 hours shooting late at night from which they wanted about 50 images on a 48 hour turnaround for web use. The fee? US$50 + cab fare. Photo Sharing at Blue Melon

Blue Melon homepage

There are numerous different photo sharing sites out there that serve different needs and purposes for different photographers. One of the newest is Blue Melon and they contacted me recently asking me if I’d be interested in putting the site through its paces. To do do, they set me up with their highest level “Enterprise” account and let me loose. Before I get into my thoughts on what it’s like, I’ll run through a few quick details about Blue Melon.

Blue Melon allows the user to upload photos from their computer or import from Facebook, Flickr etc. There are three different account types offering different features (basic $34.95/year, power $54.95/yr and enterprise $89.95/yr). All accounts offer unlimited storage space and unlimited photos but they do limit photo size. The limits are generous though – the basic account which has the most restriction still allows 12mb files which is enough for hi-res jpg from most DSLR cameras.

Use the discount code CRAIGFERGUSON when you sign up and you can get a 15% discount.
