A Great Example of Multimedia Storytelling

Malaysia-based photographers Matt Brandon and Nate Watkins have just published their latest multimedia story The Mamas of Chowrasta. It’s a look into the lives of butchers and fish mongers in the traditional markets of Penang, and what the future may hold for these trades. For anyone who appreciates excellent, cohesive storytelling, documentaries or just a look into the lives of others, you’ll get a lot out of this piece. I’ve embedded it below but please either click through to Nate’s Vimeo page or Matt’s blog and let them know your thoughts on it.

Pilgrimage of the Sea Goddess

Zhenlan Temple, Dajia hosts the 9 day, 300km Mazu Pilgrimage

Often considered a must-see event by travel photographers in Taiwan, the annual Mazu pilgrimage kicks off today in Central Taiwan. This is one of my favorite festivals to photograph however this year scheduling clashes mean that I won’t be able to head down for it. Mazu is the Goddess of the Sea in Chinese tradition, and with Taiwan being an island, she has a very strong following here. Every year, up to one million people line the streets in various locations to see the pilgrimage, and the devout actually walk with the goddess along the entire 9 day, 300+km route. The festival is hosted by the Zhenlan Temple in Dajia, Taichung which is one of Taiwan’s oldest and most respected temples. Beginning this evening, the temple’s Mazu statue is taken out and begins a procession that takes her on a tour of sister temples through the villages, towns and cities that lie along the route. The pilgrimage is one of color, noise, piety, prayer, fireworks, danger, incense, conflict, emotion and some very weary feet. If you’re in the area, this event should be on your calendar.

I’m considering leading a photo workshop and tour during the 2013 event so if you are interested leave a comment and I’ll make sure you are the first to know if/when it is organized.

Few cities conjure up dreams of times past like Kathmandu in Nepal does. This landlocked city lying in the shadow of the Himalayan mountain range has had an almost mystical attraction on pilgrims, travelers and adventurers for centuries. Personally speaking it has always held that same attraction for me, and my recent journey there marked the fourth time I’ve traveled to Nepal.

Today brings a special post. This is post number 1000 on this blog and occurs right around my sites fifth birthday. When this blog was started, I never really imagined it would grow into what it is today, and to celebrate this milestone, I’m going to present a lot of images from one of my favorite places on Earth.
