Calling For A Nuclear Free Taiwan

In the wake of the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan, activists and concerned citizens in Taiwan have been increasingly calling for an end to Taiwan’s nuclear power program. The island is currently home to three nuclear power plants with a fourth is under construction due to come on line in 2012. Over the past couple of months debate has been ongoing in Taiwan in regard to nuclear issues. For those opposed to nuclear power, this culminated in a series of demonstrations around the island on Saturday April 30th with the largest taking place in Taipei where an estimated 10 000 people took to the streets.

Anti-nuclear Protest in Taipei

Sunday March 20th saw upwards of 2000 demonstrators (some reports suggesting 5000) along with a substantial amount of Taiwan photographers and media venture onto the streets of Taipei for an anti-nuclear event. The theme for the day was “Nuclear Free Home” and banners and signs reflected that, with slogans such as “Taiwan No Nukes” and “Nuclear No Clear” prominently displayed. Taiwan currently operates three nuclear power plants with a fourth under construction, due to be completed in 2012. Recent events at Fukushima, Japan have brought the issue of nuclear power in Taiwan back into the spotlight. The three nuclear plants in operation in Taiwan account for approximately 20% of the island’s electricity needs. Proponents of nuclear power claim that it is necessary because Taiwan has no oil or coal reserves and all energy resources must be imported as there’s no way that alternatives such as wind and solar can generate enough energy with technology as it exists now. Opponents to the nuclear plants point to safety issues with the reactors especially as Taiwan is as earthquake-prone as Japan, and the reactors are of a similar type. The government had announced a one year postponement to the start date for operations at the fourth plant back in January over safety concerns, and in the wake of Fukushima, have called for thorough safety inspections at all nuclear sites.

Rice Cycle – Planting

A farmer works in his rice field at the start of the rice season.

Just a reminder that if you haven’t downloaded your free desktop calendar for March you can do so at this link.

Rice is a staple food that needs no introduction. Domesticated for approximately 10 000 years, it’s eaten by people everywhere throughout the world, with consumption increasing over the second half of the twentieth century. The rice cycle generally lasts three to four months depending on the strain of rice and the environment that it’s planted in. From the initial irrigation and planting through growing and finally harvesting and threshing, the rice cycle is labor intensive. The majority of rice grown globally is for domestic consumption with only 5-6% of the world’s rice crop being traded internationally with Thailand, Vietnam and the United States being the main rice exporters.
