Making The Print – Craft and Vision

Making The Print

Normally when I receive my reviewers copy of the latest release by Craft and Vision, I read through it, digest it, read through it again and then offer my take on it. It’s easy enough to do as I can always find some way to relate the eBook to my own work. With this latest release, Making The Print by Martin Bailey, I’m not going to do that. Why? Basically because when it comes to printing, I know nothing. I never print my own work at home, rarely print it in a lab and in fact the only time I ever see it in print is usually when I’ve shot a story for a magazine and they send me a copy. So there’s no way I can give you an honest review of Making The Print and anything less than an honest review would be cheating on my part. So consider this an announcement only.

Rabari – Encounters with the Nomadic Tribe by Mitchell Kanashkavich

Rabari - Encounters With The Nomadic Tribe

Rabari – Encounters with the Nomadic Tribe is the newest eBook by Australian travel documentary photography Mitchell Kanashkevich. It documents the Rabari people of India, a nomadic tribe of cattle herders, and features what Mitchell describes as

the first thing that really put me on the map as a photographer.

I was fortunate enough to feature Mitchell on this site a couple of years ago around the time of his first eBook and so it was with great anticipation that I started reading his latest publication. I have a feeling that history will look at his body of work and justifiably class him as one of the leading travel documentary photographers of both his generation and all time, and it’s great to have a window seat on that journey through his eBooks.

Vision Is Better II – More From Craft and Vision

Vision is Better 2

Free the mind. Free the camera. Again.

Sounds all very new-age but the closest this latest Craft and Vision release comes to an “om” is with pictures from the Indian subcontinent. What it is however is a collection of 44 essays and discussions by David duChemin. With a couple of exceptions, they have all appeared on his blog over the past 18 months or so. In that time David has gone from being a busy assignment photographer to clientless (by choice). From jetting about the world and driving across the US to confined to bed. This eBook could quite easily have been subtitled “An Eventful Journey” because that’s what it’s been, both in the physical sense and the mental / emotional. The collected essays provide a look at that journey and offer lessons on life and photography that will resonate with a lot of people. Click here to view more details

Before I jump more into this, I just want to remind you that I released my Winter 2011 newsletter last week. This is the first edition of my newsletter redesign which will now appear quarterly. Winter 2011 is a 19 page PDF that features some on-assignment work, new unpublished photographs, a review of David duChemin’s book Photographically Speaking, an interview with Steve Peer of Phottix, a look at some underwater gear and more. Click here to go to it and don’t forget to sign up in the side bar for future editions.
